A Piaggio P180 Avanti II has been transformed into a work of art by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino. The exhibit is dubbed Cacciatore di Stelle (Star Hunter) and it is the first time an aircraft has been painted by a contemporary artist. It is on display at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan until 28 April.

“The Avanti has been chosen because it can be considered a work of art itself, as an expression of Italian genius in design and engineering. That’s why this creation is an unprecedented event,” says Piaggio Aero chief executive Alberto Galassi.

The feature is part of a wider exhibition dedicated to Paladino artwork and is situated along a 500m (1,640ft) path, “which makes it the longest display dedicated to a contemporary artist”, Piaggio says.

Alrosa Mirny :: The Tupolev took skies again

Izhma Airport, March 24, 2011 – On 7 September 2010, Alrosa Mirny Air Enterprise Flight 514, operated by Tupolev Tu-154M RA-85684 suffered a complete in-flight electrical failure. A successful emergency landing was made at the closed Izhma Airport but the aircraft overran the overgrown runway and was substantially damaged. All 81 people on board survived. The aircraft was on a domestic scheduled passenger flight from Polyarny Airport, Udachny to Domodedovo International Airport,Moscow.

RA-85684 flown by test pilots of Tupolev took the skies again on Mar 24th 2011 departing from Izhma with 11 tons of fuel on board using a takeoff distance of 800 meters/2600 feet, flew a circuit at low level over Izhma and continued to Ukhta for a safe landing. The gear was not retracted during the flight as planned. The airplane was further flown to Samara where final repairs will be made before the airplane returns to service with Alrosa Mirny.

Boeing 747-8i :: Sunrise livery that surprises

Seattle – The new Boeing 747-8i (intercontinental, the 747-8 passenger version) has made its maiden flight last Sunday. This 747 is larger and moderner than ever. The special paint scheme was selected to celebrate this new Boeing milestone aircraft. The scheme in orange-red is called ‘Sunrise’.

Boeing has unveiled the largest jetliner in its history, the 747-8 Intercontinental, which it claims is significantly more fuel efficient, quieter and greener than its 747-400predecessor.

The new jetliner was revealed to a crowd of approximately 10,000 made up of customers, government officials, media and company staff.

It was displaying a new custom red-orange “sunrise” livery designed exclusively for the type, and represents a major departure from the company’s blue livery.

Boeing says the “new color palette honors many key Boeing customers whose cultures recognize these colors as symbols of prosperity and good luck,” a reference to carriers in Asia, projected to be the largest market for the 747-8 and the rival Airbus A380.

Featuring an all-new supercritical wing design with roll-axis fly-by-wire controls, a larger empennage, new avionics for precision navigation, 787-inspired interior, new General Electric GEnx-2B engines and a 5.6m (18.3ft) stretch over its predecessor the 747-400, the 747-8 Intercontinental is Boeing’s next evolution in its iconic jetliner.

“We think our customers will value the low operating costs and passengers will enjoy the comfort of the striking new interior,” says Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Jim Albaugh.

Boeing touts the 747-8I as having 12% lower costs than the 747-400, along with 16% better fuel economy and 16% fewer carbon emissions, while demonstrating a 30% smaller noise footprint.

The 76.3m-long (250ft 3in) jumbo has a range of 14,800km (8,000nm) and a maximum takeoff weight of 442,250kg (975,000lbs).

Launched in December 2006, the 747-8 Intercontinental and Freighter are the culmination of a nearly decade-long debate about Boeing’s future in the largest jet segment. Capable of accommodating 467 passengers in three classes, the -8I is Boeing’s largest jetliner in its near-hundred-year history and the first production stretch of the type in its development life.

The Intercontinental marks another first for the company with a non-airline launch customer. The first 747-8I set to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2011 will be handed over to a completion centre for conversion to a VIP Boeing Business Jet configuration, the first of eight the company has in its backlog.

German flag carrier Lufthansa expects to take delivery of its first of twenty 747-8Is in early 2012 with 386-seats in three classes.

“The 747-8 Intercontinental will be a great complement to our fleet, fitting nicely into the 400-seat category, improving our fleet’s eco-efficiency even further,” says Nico Buchholz, executive vice president, Lufthansa Group Fleet Management.

Boeing has sought to position the 747-8I in a spot just above its 365-seat 777-300ER and below the 525-seat Airbus A380.

The first 747-8I is slated to fly in the “early spring” – late March or April – and is expected to be certified in the third or fourth quarter following a 600h flight test campaign.

A total of 33 747-8I aircraft have been ordered, with Lufthansa accounting for the bulk of the backlog with 20, along with Korean Air, which holds orders for five.

Sukhoi’s orderbook of the SSJ-100 (SuperJet) rocks. Monday the Mexico’s second largest airline Interjet announced to purchase 15 x Superjets plus 5 x options, worth USD 650 million. First deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2012. Along with the order, SJI announced the execution of a “SuperCare” agreement with Interjet to provide after-sales support of its fleet of new Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft for 10 years. The Interjet SSJ-100 fleet will be supported by SJI with this tailored after-sales solution beginning with the aircraft’s entry into service.

Superjet International (SJI) is a joint venture between Alenia Finmeccanica Company and Sukhoi Holding.

Boeing 747 :: The -800 left the paintshop

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) moved the first 747-8 Freighter out of the paint hangar in Everett, Wash., Tuesday night sporting a special “light” livery.

Painted white with blue accents, the 747-8 Freighter unveiled a new twist on the Boeing Commercial Airplanes livery. It features an oversized “8” on the background of the tail as well as “747-8” on the belly.

The light livery, which saves time and expense compared to the full Boeing livery, will remain on the airplane until the flight-test program is completed. After flight test, it will be refurbished and delivered to a customer. BAE set to expand business jet portfolio

BAE Systems is preparing to offer a handful of modified RJ85s and 146-300 airliners to the business aviation community for the first time as demand for its four-engined Avro Business Jet (ABJ) family continues to grow.

The first of 13 RJ85s – approved for high-altitude operations up to 35,000ft (10,670m) and all equipped with long-range fuel tanks and modified airstairs – are scheduled to exit commercial service with Lufthansa City Line from March 2010. Meanwhile, 12 large-cabin 146-300s will be emerging from fellow German regional carrier Eurowings’ inventory over the next 18 months. “Both aircraft types are ideal business aircraft and we are hoping to place around seven RJ85s and three 146-300s into this market,” says BAE’s ABJ vice-president Stewart Cordner

The RJ85s will be priced between $5.75 million and $6.25 million without a VIP interior and up to $14 million fully equipped. The 146-300s will be tagged at around $2 million without an interior.

Cordner says the ABJ continues to sell well and the company sees potential for several sales a year, thanks to low aircraft acquisition costs and the unusual design aspects of the 146/RJ – including the four engines and airliner-sized cabin. “We have clinched four orders this year already and expected to reach six by the end of December,” he adds. In early November the company announced the sale of an ABJ to UK construction company the Gill Group.

The 146-200 will be converted to a 46-seat executive shuttle configuration and is earmarked for service entry in the second quarter of 2010 as a corporate and charter aircraft. Cordner says the ABJ has been particularly popular in the Middle East, where it is making its debut at the Dubai air show this week. “We are displaying an RJ70 belonging to Bulgaria Air,” Cordner says. “We already have a number of ABJs in service across the region with the Dubai Air Wing, Presidential Flight of Abu Dhabi, the Bahrain Defence Force, and Kuwaiti First Trading and Construction.” A late-model RJ100 ABJ is also under conversion at Inflite Engineering Services in the UK and scheduled for delivery to the Presidential Flight of Abu Dhabi in December, where it will operate alongside the existing RJ70. © Photo BAe Systems
